Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D. NM):
Sen. Martin Heinrich (D. NM)
Just because President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee doesn’t have enough votes, Mitch McConnell wants to use the “nuclear option” to change the Senate rules to confirm him.
You’re going to hear the phrase “nuclear option” this week a lot. That’s because Mitch McConnell is threatening to change the rules of the Senate to get his way and help President Trump.
Supreme Court nominees face a 60-vote procedural hurdle, but McConnell is panicking because Democrats are standing up for hard-working Americans against Trump’s nominee. Now, he’s willing to change the rules of the Senate to only require 51 votes.
This is a drastic and hypocritical move by McConnell and Senate Republicans that could cause lasting damage to the Senate.
Time and time again, McConnell has shown that when he doesn’t get his way, he just tries to change the rules.
He was the architect of the plan to reject Merrick Garland, a legitimate Supreme Court nominee, out-of-hand, and now he’s willing to do anything to push President Trump’s nominee onto the Court.
McConnell’s hypocrisy is staggering, and we must turn up the heat and prevent this damaging harm to the Senate.
